The Police in the Northern Region Monday placed ban on the installation a disputed chief at Wovogu-Gumani in the Sagnerigu District.
There are reports of rising tensions in the area, as residents arm themselves in anticipation of outbreak of violence, if the installation was not called off.
Scores of residents mostly women and children, correspondents say, have also fled the town.
Joy News correspondent Hashmin Mohammed reported from the community that, the District Security Council (DISEC) took a decision at an emergency meeting to place the ban on the ceremony.
Pupils and teachers did not show up at the community school due to the fear of outbreak of violence, Hashmin said.
District Chief Executive for Sagnerigu and chairman of the District Security Council, Sorugudoo Alhassan said, the ban was necessary to maintain law and order.
Mr. Alhassani said the DISEC is not leaving anything to chance.
The District Police Commander DSP Abanga Caesar said police is monitoring the situation.
He said the police were patrolling the various communities to avert any clashes.
