The maiden edition of the Western Region pre-season invitational soccer tournament, has been launched in Takoradi.
In an address, Chairman of Western Region Sports Committee, Wilson Arthur, said his Committee and the 11-member Local Organising Committee led by the Regional Football Association (RFA), now have an opportunity to be the architects of the new WR football brand.
He challenged them to package a memorable and compelling experiential tournament for soccer fans, players, official, advertisers and sponsors.
The tournament is the vision of the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah.
In his inaugural speech, the Minister praised the regional sports committee and committed his support and cooperation to revive soccer economy in the Western Region.
He announced that renovation works on Essipon Stadium will start this year.
The tournament will be played between September 13 to 24 at Essipon Stadium, Samartex Park and Tarkwa T&A Park. Nana Osheawura Banwa IV - Chief of Dompim Pepesa was the Chairman for the occasion.
He offered to be part of this project.
The event was patronised by the staff of National Sports Authority, members of WR Sports Committee, Regional Football Association management team, CEOs of participating teams, Coaches, Team Managers and Captains of Medeama FC, Karela FC, Hasaacas FC, Sekondi 11 Wise FC, Proud United FC, Samartex FC and Skyy FC.
Twenty selected Media Partners participated in the event. A ‘Jama’ Group was also at hand to charge the atmosphere with their brand of music and dance.
