Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the citizenry stop politicising national security issues.  He said security for matters of criminal nature are for the country’s security agencies and not for police parties. He was addressing a gathering of family members, friends and sympathizers at the 40 days ‘du’a’ (Islamic remembrance and prayers for departed) of the late Upper West Regional Chief Imam, Yakubu Issahaku, at Wa on Saturday. Alhaji Issahaku, who has been the Regional Imam since the creation of the Upper West region died last month aged of 94. ''We should avoid politicising criminal matters. Security matters are for the security forces and for the state. As political parties let’s avoid politicizing it. No matter how tempting it may be,” Dr Bawumia cautioned. He noted that government over the last couple of years has worked assiduously in all spheres of the country's development in its bid to improves the living standards of the people. The Vice President cited the planting for food and jobs, programme, the nations builders corps, one constituency one ambulance to buttress his claim.  Dr Bawumia announced that government is going to construct the Pwalugu Dam in the Upper East region at a cost of $750 million. He said it will control floods, irrigate the lands for farming and also supply electricity. He said when constructed it will be the largest singular investment by any government in the northern region of the country since Ghana's independence. He revealed it will be a game-changer in the northern belt of the country. Dr. Bawumia said although the country is increasingly becoming attractive to investors, the gains made by government can only be sustained if there are relative peace and security in the country. The Vice President spoke about his disgust for the recent spate in the killing of police officers in the country. He disclosed that government is equipping the police personnel with the requisite equipment to fight crime but noted that the police needs the support of the citizenry to succeed in the fight against crime. Vice President Dr Mahmudu Bawumia eulogised the late Upper West Regional Imam, Alhaji Yakubu Issaaka whom he described as a man of peace and tolerance, a uniting force and above all apolitical. “He treated everybody equally. Today he will see with the NDC and the next time is NPP. He accepted everybody...He also believes in the development of his people,” he said. The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, and the bishop of the Wa Diocese, Most Rev Bishop Richard Kuuia Bawobr in speeches read on their behalf spoke highly of the good attributes of the late Imam and called on the people to follow his shining examples.
