A group of civilians in a mob-like fashion on Tuesday afternoon severely beat up a policeman, who tried to arrest a motor rider for nearly knocking down his colleague.
The incident, which happened about 100 metres adjacent the headquarters of the Northern Regional Police Command, left the uniform of the police officer, Constable Frank Mensah dishevelled, while his name tag and mobile phone were removed.
Constable Mensah also lost his beret but was later found by a Samaritan and returned to him.
Constable Mensah, who sustained minor wound on the neck, was given a form to seek medical treatment when he reported the incident to the Tamale District Police Command.
The incident, which was witnessed by a correspondent of Ghana News Agency (GNA) lasted for about 30 minutes and drew a large crowd of people leading to a temporary halt to traffic on the Tamale- Ministries Road to Changli Junction.
Constable Mensah attempted to arrest the motor rider a number of times but he was prevented by the mob who pounced on him and enabled the motor rider to escape.
He told the GNA that he would not forgive his assailants since he could identify some of them.
