The Legon Police is holding a 33 year old usher with the Agape House of New Testament Church at East Legon for stealing over 20,000 Ghana cedis from the church.
Stephen Asamoah was arrested Friday morning after he was captured stealing on a CCTV camera installed in the church.
District Commander for the Legon Police, DSP Emmanuel Basontale confirmed Joy News the suspect has admitted to stealing GHc20,000 belonging to the church.
According to DSP Basontale, police preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may have stolen more than 25,000 Ghana cedis.
The police said the church detected that people have been stealing from its offerings so it mounted surveillance using CCTV. It was then that the church discovered that a member and an Ussher of the church, Stephen Asamoah were responsible for the mysterious disappearance of church’s funds.
DSP Basontale said when a search was conducted in the suspect’s house, the church’s envelopes, tithe cards and other church properties were found there.
Usually what he does was to target envelopes he suspects contain huge money, hid them somewhere and declared the rest for counting, the police indicated.
According to the police, a Stanbic Bank account the suspect opened with monies he allegedly stole from the church has about 25,000 Ghana cedis credited to him.
“He could have stolen more than that,” DSP Basontale said.
He said Stephen Asamoah has admitted to the “overwhelming evidence” that he stole from the church, but said the suspect claimed he only stole GHc20,000.
