Chieftaincy Minister, Dr. Seidu Danaa has said the legislative instrument being developed to give legal backing to the inclusion of queen-mothers in the national house of chiefs, is in tune with Ghana’s democratic system.
Speaking to JOY FM Thursday, the Chieftaincy minister noted, "We are now in the democratic system, a modern day society. the chieftaincy institution as we practice it is not exactly like what it was hundred, two hundred years ago and so, this idea of inclusion, I think is the right way forward for Ghana".
The decision to include queen-mothers is part of the reforms being instituted in the chieftaincy institution.
According to him, the issue had been on the drawing board for some time now, noting that if the queen-mothers are not included in the national house of chiefs, it will create problems of parity since the 1992 Constitution specifies a chief as including queen-mothers.
Dr. Danaa also noted that since Ghana is in a democratic system, the inclusion of queen-mothers into the national house of chiefs is the right way forward for for the country, adding that Ghana has set the pace in this area and viewed as a model.
Though some traditional areas had reservations about the inclusion of queen mothers, Dr. Danaa said most of the concerns have been dealt with but the current challenges are structural in nature.
"Of course there may be petty problems but that is why we are there. If we don't do that then we will not move forward... the problem is much more of the structural issues", Dr. Dana intimated.
The Chieftaincy ministry therefore noted that it will also focus on building capacity for the national house of chiefs to ensure that the process of chieftaincy reforms continue across traditional areas nationwide.
