Apple has announced the next generation of its wireless earbuds, AirPods Pro, that boast a customizable fit and noise cancellation.

The new premium earbuds are set for an Oct. 30 release date and will cost $249, according to the site.

Apple skipped a flashy product event and opted for a press release for the announcement of its latest product offering, which is now available for pre-order.

Along with better sound quality, new features of AirPods Pro include Active Noise Cancellation, along with a Transparency mode for the ability to hear surroundings during wear and Adaptive EQ, which helps to automatically tune music to the shape of your ear.

The wireless charging case can deliver 24hours worth of battery life, with 4.5 hours of listening time per charge.

AirPods Pro is nearly $100 more than the previous models, both of which offer five hours of listening time on one charge. Previous models of AirPods range in price depending on the charging case, with wireless priced at $199 and standard at $159.

 

The new AirPods Pro are also sweat- and water-resistant and have an expanded mesh microphone port to improve sound clarity in windy environments.

Apple says the new earbuds have a “customizable fit for all-day comfort” thanks to “refined details” in the structure of the in-ear headphones. Users can select between three sizes of soft flexible silicone tips, which offer the seal for Active Noise Cancellation. All options — small, medium and large — click into place on the earbud and conform to the shape of the ear to keep them in place while vents help to keep the pressure equalized.

To select the best size, Apple says the “Ear Tip Fit Test” will ensure the tip of the earbud will help improve fit. The test uses “advanced algorithms” to measure sound levels in each of the AirPod Pros and compare with sound coming from the speaker driver to determine if the chosen tip is the right fit for the ear. Once the right fit is determined, Adaptive EQ can “automatically tune low- and mid-frequencies of the music to the shape of an individual’s ear — resulting in a rich, immersive listening experience,” Apple says.

An outward-facing microphone can detect external sound and in turn, counter it with equal anti-noise to cancel surrounding noise before it interrupts sound quality. There’s also an inward-facing microphone that listens to sound from within the ear, using the same technology to block unwanted noise. Apple says this noise cancellation feature is adjusted up to 200 times per second.

Active Noise Cancellation can be turned off easily by pressing and holding the force sensor on the stem of the earbud. This gesture activates Transparency, a mode that allows outside noise back in and makes it “sound and feel natural.”

No changes have been made, however, to stop the chronic problem of people losing their AirPods in hard-to-reach areas, such as subway grates. The WSJ reports that the MTA received a surge of lost AirPods in March.
