The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has advised that schools equip pupils with a life skill of how to swim.
Regional Coordinator for the Organisation in the Ashanti Region, Kwabena Nsenkyire, said that he blames parents for neglecting their children during the time of rain.
“Especially fathers who care less about how and when their children get to school, leaving the responsibility of care entirely on the mothers,” he told Joy News.
His comment follows the deaths of 11 children who are less10 years in floods in the Ashanti region.
Recently, a six-year-old girl drowned at Moshie Zongo, a suburb in Kumasi on Monday evening when she got caught up in torrential rainfall on her way to school.
The girl was swept away by floodwaters after a fall led to her death.
Children being swept away by floodwaters is not a new phenomenon and NADMO believes that children learning how to swim could help reduce the number of children dying due to rapid floodwaters.
Numerous residents in the Ashanti region have been displaced by the October torrential rains; some have died and properties have been lost.
NADMO has cited logistical constraints as one of its weaknesses in addressing the perennial challenges with flooding in the Ashanti region.
Mr Nsenkyire’s outfit, for one, needs an excavator to desilt and widen some gutters and storm drains in the Ashanti region to abate the floods.
