A pressure group, Patriots for Peace and Development (PPD), has called on former Presidents John Rawlings and John Mahama to promote peace during the December 2020 elections.
In a statement released by the Convener of PDD, Richard Danso, the group alleged that the continuous use of hooligans by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), during protests demonstrates that the party promotes violence.
“We are by this statement tasking the two respected leaders in the NDC to make sure that the country does not experience any kind of trouble. The monies that they are using to support and sponsor these demonstrations, can be saved to support their MPs within their respective constituencies so they can make a meaningful impact in the 2020 general elections.
“The NDC should have at the back of their minds that they lost with over one million votes. It would only take hard work and determination on their part to reserve this,” the PPD statement said.
The group said the NDC’s opposition to the Electoral Commission’s plan to compile a new voters’ register for the 2020 elections will yield no results through demonstrations.
“We humbly advise that they [NDC] should suspend supporting these hooligans and rather get prepared for the 2020 general elections. We must respect institutions… If demonstrations could change the stand of EC, it could have happened when Let My Vote Counts went on serials of demonstration in 2016 trying to change the stand of the Electoral Commission,” the group added.
“We respectfully ask the NDC to focus on their manifesto and how it would resonate with the masses. Unless they know that they are already defeated that is the only means they could use to destabilise the democracy that we have.
“We would hold them [Mr Rawlings and Mr Mahama] responsible should anything happen before during and after the 2020 general elections. You need to call your party members to order…” the group said.
According to PPD, the NDC is hiding behind smaller parties to destabilize the country because they do not exist.
The NDC should know that interfering with EC’s constitutional mandate is illegal, PPD stressed.
“We are also calling on the security apparatus not to sleep…They must know that it is their responsibility to ensure peace and tranquillity on December 7, 2020,” the group said.
