Twenty-four of the victims killed in the Dompoase Junction road crash which happened in the early hours of January 14, 2020 on the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway have been identified.
According to the police, of the 34 who perished, 29 died at the scene of the accident while five died on attendance at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
Among them, is the driver of one of the Yutong buses involved in the accident, Evans Appiah, NPP Essikado-Ketan constituency treasurer, Hajia Adizatu Abubakar, and a couple who died with their 8-month-old baby.
The crash which involved two Yutong buses occurred at 12:15 am on the highway when the red Yutong bus travelling from Accra to Takoradi tried to overtake the vehicle in front of it and ended up running into the oncoming white Takoradi to Accra-bound Hyundai bus, the police said.
Most of those instantly killed in the crash were either on their way to and from Takoradi or Accra for family visits and business-related trips.
They were teachers, managers, market women, traders, couples and children who left behind bereaved families.
Daughter of Fidelia Afi Salomey, a market woman who died after being taken to the hospital, said about her mother, “She was our everything.”
Hajia Adizatu Abubakar was described by her sister as a woman who always went out of her way to help people in the community.
All the victims identified have been named as John Loctman Sam, Abdul Razak Karim, Fredricka Essiamah, Vida Arthur, Felix Turkson, Rafat Abdul Kasim, Hagar Quaicoe, Isaac Ansah Awuku, Martha Ninsing, Otempa Adepa and Efua Essoun.
Others were Cudjoe Juliet, Grace Mensah, Charles Abekah, Joseph Aduku Mozu, Patrick Atsideka, Bismark Grant, Augustina Ansah, Jacob Korangye, Evans Appiah, Michael Goin, Bishop Goin, Richard Goin and Augustina Asiedu.
The terrible road accident which ushered in the new year, has brought the carnage on Ghanaian roads into the spotlight again, with Joy FM leading the charge with its #ArriveAlive campaign to reduce road traffic accidents in Ghana.
