Accident victim Emmanuel Etroo has been released from the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi after spending nearly five months at the facility over an outstanding medical bill of GH¢39,000.

The rubber tapper sustained severe injuries on February 15, 2026, when a Sprinter vehicle knocked him off his motorbike at Ewusiejoe on the Takoradi-Agona road.

His right leg was badly fractured and required multiple surgeries. Although the driver initially promised to cover his medical expenses, he was unable to honour the commitment, leaving Mr Etroo to accumulate medical bills.

Mr Etroo underwent four surgeries, with the first costing GH¢15,500, but remained at the hospital because of the outstanding balance and the need for a fifth operation.

His situation came to public attention after Public Health Nurse Linda Otoo appealed for financial assistance on social media, prompting the intervention of Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson.

The Minister paid the full GH¢39,000 outstanding bill to secure Mr Etroo’s release and has also pledged GH¢11,000 towards his fifth surgery, which doctors hope will improve his mobility.

Speaking to the media after visiting him on Sunday, August 23, Mr Nelson said he was moved by the appeal and believed no patient should remain in hospital solely because of an inability to settle medical bills.
