The Northern region has recorded nine deaths and 13 injuries in January from 15 motorbike accidents for the month of January alone.
Within the same period, 11 vehicles were involved in accidents with only one death recorded. This was disclosed at an engagement with the king of Dagbon with political parties and key stakeholders in the region.
According to the Northern Regional Director of the Road Safety Commission, Alexander Ayata the death toll from the use of motorbikes is alarming, therefore, there is the need for massive campaign to reduce the deaths.
He commended the Catholic Church for instituting the “No Helmet No Entry” policy in all Catholic Church facilities in the region to encourage the use of helmet by the people.
Mr Ayata called on political party leaders to encourage their supporters to do the right thing when they are on the roads so that they can stay alive to vote them into power.
“You want to win power it’s excellent, but you must win power when your people are alive and can vote for you” he noted
He tasked heads of department and the media to also sever as advocates to help reduce the carnage on the roads.
The Yaa-Naa called on the people of Ghana, especially political party leaders to educate their supporters on the need to stay alive by respecting road traffic regulations.
He said the December elections is very close and urged political parties to conduct their campaigns with decorum adding that the misbehavior by supporters with motorbikes would not only endanger their lives but also pose danger to other road users.
The Yaa-Naa handed over about 3,000 books with road safety tips for some selected schools in Yendi.
He symbolically presented two helmets each to all the registered political parties in the country as a symbol for them to carry similar messages to their supporters.
The Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II was nominated as the National Road Safety Goodwill Ambassador in 2019. The role of his royal majesty Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II is to use his position to help influence the behavioiur and attitude of people towards the rising carnage on the country’s roads.
The Northern Region is a hub to motorbikes use as it is a major source of transport in the region. This makes these accidents critical for discussion.
