Some displaced children at Mensah Guinea, an Accra suburb, which had illegal structures demolished by the AMA last Friday are crying for shelter from individuals and benevolent organizations, as they have no place to sleep.

Two of them, who spoke to Joy News’ Michaela Anderson Tuesday, said the pulling down of the structures last Friday has rendered them and their parents homeless.

The situation, they added is affecting their education since their parents could no longer afford to buy them food and stationery for school.

According to them, life has been very difficult for them ever since their 'small London' was destroyed.

Some of the women wailed uncontrollably as the bulldozers rammed into the structures and destroyed the little properties they had acquired for themselves over the years.

Mensah Guinea is located just behind the Arts Centre in Accra and labelled as one of the areas surrounded with filth.

The area has been blamed for the recent cholera outbreak in the metropolis because the people there lived under unhygienic conditions.

Reports also suggested that 16 people who died from the cholera outbreak were from Mensah Guinea.

Joy FM’s Francis Abban reported that at about 9:30 am that fateful Friday, AMA officials brought heavy duty equipment to demolish the structures. 

The squatters were given three days by the assembly to vacate the area to pave way for the demolition exercise but it fell on deaf ears.
