The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has expressed concern about what it says are the low standards of local language broadcasting in the country.
The foundation is worried media houses that broadcast in local languages particularly Akan, do so without recourse to journalistic standards.
Exaggerations in news presentation styles and excessive humour in presentation have been identified as some of the ethical violations in local language broadcasting.
The foundation on Friday held a forum to discuss how to deal with the problem.
Executive Director of the Foundation Sulemana Braimah, said, “generally there are problems with the standards of our media, but its more pronounced when you deal with local language media”.
He said there is the need to go beyond working with journalists in local radio stations to engage media owners too. The MFWA Executive Director made the comments at a forum Friday to discuss how to deal with the issue.
“The trend is that owners set up the station, what they want is money and so even if unethical things is what will bring them money they don’t care”, said Mr Braimah.
