Forty-five (45) communities in the Awutu-Senya District and four others in the Cape Coast Municipality, all in the Central Region have been connected to the national grid under the Government of Ghana/Weldy Lamont electrification project.
This brings to 500, the number of communities connected to the national grid since the commencement of the rural electrification program which aims at making electricity accessible to as many Ghanaians as possible and achieving UNDP universal access to electricity by 2016.
Commissioning one of the projects in Akrampah in the Awutu Senya District, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah assured of government’s unwavering support to improving their living standards and alleviating poverty, particularly in rural areas of the country.
Mr. Buah further hinted of a comprehensive electrification program being drawn up by his Ministry to ensure that the national electricity access rate rises to at least 100% by the end of 2016. He also inspected the newly constructed ECG Bulk Supply Point (BSP) Project in Cape Coast.
The Energy and Petroleum Minister also paid a courtesy call on the DCE for the Awutu–Senya District Assembly where they both led a delegation to the Awutu Traditional Council as well as the Dankwakrom Traditional Council in Cape Coast, to discuss developmental issues in the area among others.
