The Savings and Development Dialogue (SDD) is urging the strict adherence to social distancing directives and fears ,Ghana risks a humanitarian crisis if the instruction is disregarded.
President Akufo-Addo, as part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 – the respiratory disease caused by coronavirus – has issued social distancing and stay at home orders.
But news of the directive being flouted worried the SDD, which in a statement copied to Myjoyonline.com, commended government and stakeholder efforts at containing the spread of the virus but said more can be done.
"We may very well be headed for a humanitarian crisis if we do not adhere to social distancing strictures, which in the absence of a vaccine, is our best hope of tapering the steep rise in cases, allowing health systems and personnel some breathing room to catch up.
“While lockdowns in the developed world have been instituted and enforced with ease (with notable exceptions in the US), already, it is becoming clear that lockdowns in the third world are not such a practical matter.”
The SDD is calling for mass education systems to be deployed to adequately inform citizens of the uniqueness of “this monster than confronts us.”
