The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has again called on the citizenry to strictly adhere to the Covid-19 safety measures outlined by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Dr Titus Beyuo, the GMA Deputy General Secretary, in an interview on Joy News following the death of surgeon Dr Richard Kisser, he admitted that some health workers are likely to contract and succumb to the disease.
But, he added that should Ghanaians practice the safety measures to reduce the prevalence of the disease, lives of health workers will be protected also.
“The nature of the disease is such that as long as you are managing patients you are exposed. Therefore, the best protection we can get in addition to Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) is for the general public to help us.
“Because, if we have a reduction in the prevalence of the disease that is when we can have safety for our healthcare workers,” he stressed.
He also noted that the loss of Dr Richard Kisser has sent the number of specialists who have died due to Covid-19 to three.
In June, the Medical Superintendent of the Kwadaso SDA Hospital in Kumasi Dr Harry Owusu Boateng died after contracting the virus.
In April, Professor Jacob Plange-Rhule, the Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, also died of Covid-19 at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
The Deputy General Secretary, sees this as disturbing since the loss of a specialist in this country leaves a huge gap that often takes time to fill.
