Sources close to Accra Girls senior high school (SHS) say some students have tested positive for Covid-19.

They told Joy News that on Monday, those who showed symptoms of the novel coronavirus were isolated in the sickbay of the Mamobi-based school.

The Ayawaso North Health directorate sent officials to the school to have a look and evaluate the situation.

According to sources, the health officials tested the 11 students at the sickbay and some of them tested positive.

Those who tested positive were subsequently sent to the Ga East Municipal Hospital for treatment.

The sources told Joy News some students say they are living in fear and some parents want to come and take their children back home.

The president in his 10th address to the nation on measures put in place to check the spread of the coronavirus in the country announced the reopening of schools but for only final year students of Junior High School, Senior High School and Tertiary institutions.

“SHS 2 gold track and SHS 3 students are to resume on the 22nd of June, with a maximum of 25 students and final year Junior High School students are to resume on the 29th of June with a maximum of 30 students, while remaining students still remain at home,” president Akufo-Addo said.

Some Students Representative Council (SRC) have said all final year students should be tested for Covid-19 as they push for what they call a gradual re-opening of school.

They say testing students before being accepted in school to prepare for their final examination will ensure the safety of all.

They proposed all students should be kept in boarding school as a measure to check the spread.

They believe it is about time the education sector learns to adapt to the situation which is envisaged to continue for over a year.

Public discussion for some time has focused on whether schools should open or not. Many have tabled a number of reasons schools must remain closed.
