Lecturer at the Global Health Department of the School of Public Health at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) says it is early days yet to conclude that Ghana is no longer at the threat of the novel coronavirus.
Dr John Amuasi said the fact that Ghana has made some significant progress in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic does not provide a leeway for the county to rest its oars.
Ghana is said to be nearing effective containment of the virus as the latest data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reveal a significant reduction in active cases and new infections.
In its latest update on September 3, the Service says active cases have dropped below 1,000 cases mark to 856, the lowest in months.
But the leader of the Global Health and Infectious Diseases Research Group at Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) is cautioning against complacent.
Speaking on the Joy FM Midday News, Dr Amuasi explained that “when things get better, it is time to double down and do more of the right things than to suggest that one is out of the woods just now.”
“I don’t mean that things are necessarily going to get bad again but as I said, I just want to help us put things into perspective,” he said on Friday.
He cited examples from countries such as New Zealand, South Korea among others who saw Covid-19 case surges after going months without a single case.
“However, being a sign of good thing things to come is very tricky to predict because we have seen very clearly that this disease is able to rebound and come back even stronger than before,” Dr Amuasi added.
He, however, acknowledged that “things have improved and this is pretty obvious to everyone.”
“If you look at the various types of graphs and other styles of information we put out there, it’s pretty apparent that we have made some giant strides.”
Ghana has so far recorded 44,713 confirmed cases with 43,577 recoveries/discharges and 280 deaths.
