A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Peace for Savannah has condemned the alleged comments made by the Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama against the people of Akyem in the Eastern Region.
This comes after former President Mahama endorsed the comment by sharing a post by Bolgatanga Central Constituency MP, Isaac Adongo title: "Agyapa Royalties Fraud Is The Last Straw: The Akyem Sakawa Boys and Grandpas Must Go" in which he described President Akufo-Addo's reign as one of family and friends and tagged them variously as "Akyem Mafia" and "Akyem Sakawa Boys."
In view of that, the NGO’s Secretary, Iddi Adam Osman said, the people of Savannah Region distance themselves from the comment their fellow country man’s comment.
"The people of Gonjaland are not tribal bigots. They are very much awake and discerning. Undoubtedly, former president John Dramani Mahama is our own. We are not disowning him at all. The people of Gonjaland pushed him to the top so he will get us development.

“He was never taught by our chiefs and elders how to insult and cast aspersions at other tribes. To be straight on the point, his insult on the good people of Akyem was unfortunate and backward. As sons and daughters of Gonjaland, we would not also be happy should anybody single us out and heap insults on us just because a Gonja is the flagbearer of the NDC,” he said.
Mr Osman then appealed to all ethnic groups particularly to the Akyems of the Eastern Region to disregard suggestions that what the former President said is a representation of the people of Gonja.
“We collectively disassociate ourselves from leaders and would be leaders like former president John Dramani Mahama whose quest for political power will want to walk on a dangerous path such as tribalism,” he stated.
