The Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, is advocating for an increase in the security detail assigned to Members of Parliament.
This follows the death of his colleague MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford of the Mfantseman Constituency, who was attacked by robbers on Friday, October 9.
According to Mr Iddrisu, Mr Hayford’s death is as a consequence of the lack of adequate protection and security for Members of Parliament.
“Our security will have to be elevated, as it has been argued and asked for. Sometimes when we ask for this, the public thinks we are asking for too much,” he said on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Friday.
To support his argument, the Tamale South MP referred to the case of the late Member of Parliament JB Danquah who was stabbed to death on the night of Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at his Shiashie residence in Accra.
Mr Iddrisu said that it is regrettable that the perpetrators of that crime have still not been punished in accordance with the law.
He explained that circumstances like these murders show the dangers MPs are exposed to in their line of work.
“It has been a prime concern of Speaker Mike Ocquaye on how to improve the security of MPs, the house committee will have to take an immediate look at it.”
He asked for the Inspector General of Police to "move in full force and commission and investigation into the circumstances leading to the death" of his fellow MP.
