Members of the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly in the North East Region have summoned the Regional Water Manager over an acute water shortage that is putting a major strain on the day-to-day transactions and activities of the people.
Following the delay in completion of a water supply project started over three years ago by the government, a major water shortage has hit the west municipal capital, Walewale, in the North East Region.
The Assembly noted that although work on the project had started by a firm owned by the Northern Regional Chairman of the ruling party, Mohammed Bantima Samba, not much progress has been made.
Responding to the said situation, peeved members of the assembly have therefore summoned the regional manager of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency to brief the house on the state of the water project.
The situation has compelled residents in the town to rely on tricycle operators to draw water from unwholesome water sources, including hand-dug wells and small dams in nearby villages.
Unfortunately, individuals who are unable to purchase water from the tricycle operators settle for uncovered wells as their source of water for consumption and all other household purposes.
This, as a result, has sparked fears of an outbreak of waterborne diseases as the town is already battling with sanitation.
