Management of Jospong Group of Companies has cut sod for the construction of the Northern Solid and Liquid Waste Treatment facility at Gbalahi in the Sagnarigu Municipality.
The cost of the facility which includes a 200 tonnes solid and 1000 cubic meters of liquid waste treatment plants is estimated at €20 million and is expected to be completed in 4 and 12 months respectively.
Addressing a gathering at the ceremony, Zoomlion’s Operations Manager, Florence Larbi said the solid waste treatment plant will be equipped with ultra-modern technology to provide sustainable waste management solution in the area.

She noted that the region generates about 183, 000 tomes of waste annually and a chunk of it ends up in the landfills making it hazardous for residents.
Mrs Larbi was, however, optimistic that with the establishment of the facility, waste could be recycled and reused for the benefits of society.
She indicated that the region produces about 60 per cent organic waste, therefore, a lot of compost could be manufactured to boost government’s Planting for Food and Jobs programme.
For the liquid waste treatment plant, she stated that although the liquid waste generated in Tamale is between 400 and 500 cubic meters per day their aim is to build a capacity that will serve neighbouring towns and districts.
According to her, the plant upon completion will create about 75 direct and over 200 indirect jobs.

On his part, the Northern Region Minister, Salifu Saeed said with Tamale being one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, interventions such as this are important to promote the holistic development of the area.
He further noted that poor sanitation results in several health problems, hence, the establishment of the treatment plant will improve the well-being of citizens in the area.
