The National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah has accused some politicians of deliberately creating a false sense of rising insecurity in the country.
The Afigya-Sekyere West MP attributed this phenomenon to the ever-increasing politicisation of security issues as the December 7, general elections approach.
Briefing Parliament on his outfit’s readiness towards the upcoming December polls, he said such utterances run contrary to the facts on the ground.
He said, “There seems to be a deliberate attempt by certain individuals to create a false notion of rising insecurity in the country. The facts however runs counter to this false notion. For instance, they (the facts) suggest a reduction in crime levels in the country.
“It’s also important to state that Ghana’s commendable management of the Covid-19 pandemic was possible in part due to the effectiveness of the security coordination implemented by the state security architecture.”
He added, “But I think this poor solution of insecurity stems from the deliberate politicization of issues of national security in the country. And I think it has become more pronounced in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.”
Kan Dapaah explained that an assessment of such claims revealed that politicians who had been warning of a rising sense of insecurity were also culpable of threatening violence on their campaign podiums should they lose the elections.
He called on parliament and the general public to condemn such acts.
Mr Kan Dapaah said, “An assessment of recent developments that the police force face reveals that the false notion of insecurity is fueled by some politicians.
"These politicians at one moment openly threaten violence should they lose the elections and at another express concern about rising insecurity in the country. This is unacceptable and must be condemned in the most certain terms irrespective of where it is coming from.”
However, the Minister assured that the state security forces despite the politicization of issues of national security remains resolute in ensuring a peaceful and secured environment for all Ghanaians.
