The Chairman of the Ghana Christian Council, Most Rev Dr Paul K. Boafo says the resignation of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor came as a shock to him.
Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show, Friday, the Chairman alluded to the fact that a lack of cooperation between the government and the Special Prosecutor largely contributed to his resignation.
“For him to just out of the blue tender his resignation was a shock, and I thought that something should have been done to prevent him,” he said.
He noted that Mr Amidu is recognised for his credibility and fierce stance against corruption, as such “if he couldn’t do it, then it’s a failure on our part.”
According to him, government's failure to maintain Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor is indicative that Ghana has lost the fight against corruption.
“For us to have someone heading an institution to come out and say that 'I resign', it means that we are defeated,” Rev Boafo stressed.
The former Attorney General during an interview on Citi FM indicated that he has so far received various forms of threats following his resignation.
Rev Boafo, however, noted that “these are the impediments that come and these are part and parcel of corruption".
“Fighting corruption in every sphere, everywhere is swimming against the tide, it’s not that simple, and it’s not that easy for you to say that you will have it smooth sailing,” he said.
The Special Prosecutor resigned from his position on November 16, 2020, 3 years after he was appointed by President Akufo-Addo.
In his letter of resignation, he stated that “The events of 12th November 2020 removed the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report and dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately.”
