President Akufo-Addo is counting on the Council of State for wise counsel on matters of the state.
Swearing in the newly elected president of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II, President Akufo-Addo said he has every intention to exploit the constitutional provisions which enjoins him to refer bills passed or been considered by Parliament for their input.
Thus, all members of the Council must play their role in giving out the best of advice during deliberations on matters of national interest for the good of the country.
"As a distinguished traditional ruler, you have the quality and experience that can enhance work of the council. You're joining a Council that has so far proven to be effective and excellent in its deliberations and output.
"It is my hope and expectation that you also make sound contribution to the proceedings of the Council and help enrich my presidency for the benefit of the Ghanaian Council," he said.
The swearing-in comes after Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II who is the Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area in the Western North Region was elected president of the National House of Chief.
Ogyeahohuo defeated the incumbent President, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State Togbe Afede XIV, who was seeking re-election. Togbe Afede polled 25 votes whilst Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II polled 47 votes.
His win automatically qualifies him to be a member of the council of state.
This in line with provisions of Article 89 of the the 1992 Constitution which mandates the President to establish "a Council of State to counsel the President in the performance of his functions."
In view of this, President Akufo-Addo is hopeful that Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II will executive his duties (advisory role) dispassionately regardless of the Chief's background.
"I must congratulate you on your election, firstly as President of the National House of Chiefs and secondly on your appointment as member of the Council of State.
"I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with you at first hand and I'm confident that you will discharge your duties at the best of your abilities in service to God and country," President Akufo-Addo stated.
On his part, Ogyeahohuo Yaw Gyebi II pledged commitment to contribute to national development.
"I'm going to work with the other members, cooperate with them and make sure that whatever advise, counsel that we are supposed to give you will go to help in you achieving that you have set for yourself," the Chief said.
