The Communications Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the IGP to provide security for MPs-elect of the party following recent attacks on some of them.
Kakra Essamuah in a statement condemning the attacks also called on government and the leadership of the NPP to call party supporters perpetuating such acts to order.
“The government headed by HE Nana Akufo-Addo [should] restrain the hoodlums from his party who, from the registration period and throughout the elections, have committed acts of vandalism and violence against NDC members and supporters that soil the image of our dear country,” he said.
The comment follows the attack of two newly elected NDC MPs after the 2020 election results were declared.
Dorcas Toffey of the Jomoro Constituency and Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey of the Keta Constituency were the victims of the attack.
Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey was allegedly attacked at his home at Anlo-Afiadenyigba by some persons suspected to be armed robbers.
The suspected robbers beat him and his family to a pulp and made away with money and other valuables.
Dorcas Affo-Toffey in a Facebook post also said she had been attacked in her home by some unknown men believed to be supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“This is what is happening at my residence right now… I am under attack by the NPP in Jomoro allegedly lead by Eric Muah, their constituency secretary,” she wrote.
The NDC is alleging that the attacks were orchestrated by the NPP to ensure that the two MPs would been hospitalised during the swearing-in of the 8th Parliament.
This, the NDC explained, will enable the NPP to “claim majority status and empower them to select the Speaker of Parliament.”
Mr Essamuah, however, urged individual MPs-elect to “take all necessary measures to boost their personal security, just as we strongly urge the party in the affected Constituencies to offer assistance towards achieving maximum security for all NDC MPs-elect”.
