Member of Parliament for Hemang Lower Denkyira, Bright Wireko Brobby has debunked reports that suggest he contributed to Prof. Mike Oquaye’s defeat on Thursday dawn.
A video posted on social media with a running commentary claimed that he was the NPP member who voted against the party’s choice by not partaking in the voting exercise.
The video purported that, Mr Brobby after taking the ballot paper went straight to drop it in the box without going into the voting booth.
But speaking to Joy News, the NPP MP said he ticked the paper with a pen he took from the Ayawaso Central MP, Henry Quartey whilst walking up the podium which is why he did not go into the voting booth.
“It is not as if we were going for the ink to tump print, this was a pen matter, you grab one and then you vote.
At the time I was voting, I was the 273 person so the voting was virtually over so I didn’t even see the need to go in while I could just do it on my way to put it in the box.”
He stressed embarking on such act “doesn’t make sense” as both he and Prof Oquaye have a good relationship and nominated by their party leader.
“What will motivate me to vote against the President’s nominee when the President had actually nominated me too?” Mr Brobby questioned.
“For me, Prof. Oquaye has been my leader for the last four years, he’s been the speaker, I have not had any problems with him whatsoever so what will motivate me to vote against him.”
Prof. Mike Oquaye was defeated by Alban Sumana Bagbin with two votes raising questions as to who from the NPP may have voted the opposition’s choice.
Meanwhile, Mr Wireko Brobby wants the NPP to look beyond the defeat in the speakership race and focus on uniting itself to deliver on the president's agenda.
“Pointing fingers at each other would not be too good. I think that what has happen isn’t good generally for us as a party but we need to move on.”
