The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made a clarion call to its rank and file to champion the principles, ideals, and success stories of the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings in order to preserve his status in Ghana’s political history.
This was made known at a public lecture organised by the party as part of programmes leading up to the final burial ceremony of the Ghana’s longest serving president.
Speaking at the event, former president John Dramani Mahama urged intellectuals and close associates of the Rawlings to uphold the principles of the late soldier and also document his history to prevent distortions.
“I dare say that with J.J’s passing the revisionists of our history will commence their work again to try and denigrate the history of his life and work. That is what I say unless those of us who knew him and worked with him document his life and works for posterity, then historians of the hunter will write it for us,” he said on Monday.
He further indicated that the passing of the NDC founder presents a real test of boding among members of the party as because “now more than ever is when we should close our ranks to ensure the survival of our party and tradition.”
“The challenge that political parties face that makes the difference between success and failure is how you survive the passing of your founder,” he emphasised.
Mr Mahama was one of many including the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and leading members such as Alhaji Hudu Yahaya who graced the occasion to celebrate the life of the statesman.
Jerry John Rawlings died after a short illness at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on November 12.
