KNUST students appeal to government to resolve TEWU impasse

Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST have appealed to government to resolve its impasse with the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU).

According to them, the union’s strike is gradually taking a toll on sanitation on campus.

TEWU withdrew its services last week as it demanded improved conditions of service.

During JoyNews' visit, waste bins were full to the brim, left uncollected and overflowing with filth.

One student said; "It's going to affect our studies because we just reopen and the Covid-19 virus is also in. If you want to urinate or visit the toilet, if you want to do all those stuff, learning will be difficult."

Meanwhile, KNUST's Local TEWU Chairman warned school authorities against attempting to employ temporal staff to take over their activities while they embark on the strike action.

According to Charles Arthur, "the employer can only do that to ensure essential minimum maintenance to protect raw materials. In the case of universities, it's not applicable."
