The country’s number one golfer Vincent Torgah has won the Nsuta Golf Club President’s Cup as he prepares to represent Ghana in Nigeria.
Held at the Nsuta Golf Course to honour the birthday of the president annually brought together a total of 34 players made up of 6 professionals and 28 amateurs.
Vincent who beat the second position with 13 shots says it was a good exercise for the tournament next month in Nigeria.
After the two-day tournament, James Akwaboah won the men division with a net score of 141 whiles the founder and the President came second with 143, followed closely was Yaw Anarf 148.
Ruth Menz won the ladies event with 167 scores beating Monica Akakpo with 178.
Vincent Torgah with 137 scores won the professionals, Prince Amponsah came second with 149 and George Osei came third with 165. The Three pros took home a total of 500 dollars.
The tournament was in honour of the president of the Nsuta Golf Club, Sheikh Salifu Taylor on his birthday which fell on February 13 and 14.
"It is just about golf, today I came second but i promise you that next year i will take the title back."
Mr Salifu Taylor believes involving the professionals encourages the amateur players to continue learning the game.
"Also we came together to buy a lot of prizes for all the participants, we did that to encourage and motivate the professional golfers because most of the golfers are not working so we try to bring them together to enjoy the game.
We brought the professionals because It is good for young golfers to learn from professionals like Vincent because he has a lot of exposure and experience".
Captain of the Nsuta Golf Club, Alexander Bewong, says such tournaments are critical to grow the game golf.
"It has come to stay, we did it last year, we doing it today and next year it is going to happen just to encourage golfers. Golf is about exercising , keeping fit and good for your health.
In this covid-19 times, doctors advise that we exercise and do a lot of walking, and with Golf we do a lot of walking and do a lot good briefing so I will encourage everyone to play golf."
Mr Bewong also awarded Torgah 500cedis for not losing a ball throughout the game.
Vincent Torgah, says the tournament was critical to prepare him for his invitational tournament in Nigeria.
"They played very well so I happy that I played with such wonderful players. It is a preparation for my for my tournament coming up - Bayelsa Governor's Cup - in Nigeria, which i have been invited so I want to honour and represent Ghana.
It is a tournament I am looking forward to, to improve my game a bit before I get to the European circles".
Meanwhile, the best scores for the first and second days, went to James Akwaboah and Issah Salifu Taylor respectively.
Worst score over the two days went to Frank Antwi of Obuasi. Vincent Mitaner and Adams Whishart were awarded best Guest players.
The tournament, according to Saliki Issah Salifu Taylor, will be annual Cup to honour the president’s birthday.
All Covid-19 protocols were observed. The president cut three cakes on his birthday. He said next year insha Allah it shall be greater.
