The spokesperson for the National Chief Imam is asking Christian and Muslim MPs to come together to propose a bill that will force government to ban same-sex marriage in Ghana.
Speaking on the AM Show Monday, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu said, “I am calling for any kind of enactment that will ensure that this kind of practice is completely banned and outlawed. I must also add that this is not the duty of the President alone”.
He commended the President for saying that same sex marriage will not be legalsed under his watch.
President Akufo-Addo at the installation of the 2nd Archbishop of the Anglican Church held in Asante Mampong on Saturday said “I have said it before, and let me stress it again, that it will not be under the Presidency of Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo that same-sex marriage will be legal”.
This comment has been greeted with excitement especially from members of the Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values who have been at the frontiers of the fight against legalisation of LGBTQI+ activities in Ghana.
Sheikh Aremeyaw told Benjamin Akakpo on the AM Show that he wants “both the Christian and Muslim Parliamentary caucuses to join hands and place a bill before parliament for a law to be enacted to completely ban and outlaw same-sex marriage and all other such acts”.
He also advised parents to be alert because “there’s a storm of immorality that is blowing that is going to attack our family lives. Family life is under threat and we must all rise against it”.
His comments were supported by Dr Samuel Onwona Ofori, an Executive Member of the Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values who was also on the AM Show.
He said dealing with the issue with a law will put everyone in their place.
