A Clinical Pharmacist, Dr. Ellen Sam has disclosed that a lot of female health workers contemplated quitting their jobs for fear of contracting the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to her, following myths, misconceptions and conspiracy theories which initially surrounded the pandemic, some frontline workers nearly tendered in their resignation.
"They really wanted to resign," she emphasised.
Her comment comes as part of discussions on the International Women's day edition of the Super Morning Show.
Speaking on the theme "Women in leadership; Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world" she indicated that women, especially frontline health workers have contributed immensely to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
She added, however, they have also been fraught with a lot challenges, including depression.
Sharing her experience, she stated that, "sometimes [we are] even faced with stigma from our family. So there was a lot of fear, there was a lot of emotional stress," she said.
"It's been very stressful. Sometimes you'll have to work long hours, long shifts, sometimes you may not necessarily have everything you need to work.
"Some women have had to be away from home for long hours and sometimes you see people die, the emotional toll on you the health worker and it looks like you the health worker is taking care of everyone but who is taking care of you?
"And so you realised that a lot of the frontline workers were depressed because they looked at the situation and feared," she added.
