Policy think tank IMANI Africa has vowed to petition the President for the removal of the Electoral Commissioners if it fails to create a new constituency for the residents of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL).
It comes after the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the residents' case against John Peter Amewu's eligibility as Hohoe MP.
Discussing the issue on JoyNews’ PM Express, Founding President of IMANI, Franklin Cudjoe said they will petition for the removal of the Commissioners for what he says is a dereliction of duty.
“We should tell the EC to do the right thing and get the constituency or areas having their election and their elected representatives. We will pursue that as well, so yes, we will appeal and possibly if the EC doesn’t do it we will petition for the EC to be removed and pursue that also in Parliament,” he said.
Meanwhile, a CDD-Ghana Fellow in Public Law and Justice, Prof Stephen Kwaku Asare argues that although the constitution stipulates that a new constituency cannot be created after a new Parliament has been sworn in, this is an extraordinary situation which that constitutional provision does not relate to.
Adding his voice to calls by SALL residents, Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Adams called on the Electoral Commission to employ every means to get this a constituency created for the people.
