Global Health Expert, Dr. John Amuasi says despite Ghana having a robust health system, fully equipped and capable of picking up threats of a third Covid-19 wave, it is still dangerous to suggest there is no real cause for alarm.
According to the Senior Researcher and Fellow at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research, there will be no cause for alarm if the country decides to use technologies in the health system such as quarantining travellers according to the stipulated and mandatory 14 days isolation procedure to prevent the spread of the virus.
“What is being done with these positive people...we cannot control how people get their Covid out there. So the question is if we are having such a robust system, which is able to catch them [Covid-19] when they come in, what are we doing with them," he quizzed.
“Are we letting them go home to self-isolate, that is totally wrong. Are we isolating them and keeping them on watch and testing them to know they are clean and releasing them to go.
"If we are doing the latter, then I think that that is great, and I will say that then there is no real cause for alarm. But if we are not doing that and allowing people to go home and self-isolate then that could be a problem," he added.
His comment follows a report from Frontiers Healthcare Service (FHS) of the rising number of positive Covid-19 cases being recorded at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
In his view, the fact that FHS has been able to point out "that we have detected this X number of people are coming in which is a significant increase over a certain period of time" is worth acknowledging and milestone achievement.
"If the net was not working well enough we will not be able to pick up these numbers, there is actually a very bright side to this which is, we have a system...if there is a slip we will catch it," he told JoyNews' Aisha Ibrahim.
But regardless of this advantage that Dr. Amuasi speaks of, the Minority in Parliament has called on government and relevant stakeholders to take immediate steps to curb the increasing number of positive Covid-19 cases being recorded at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh expressed worry after the shocking revelation made by Frontiers Healthcare Service (FHS) that on Saturday, April 24, an all-time high figure of 75 travelers tested positive for the virus at the airport.
Mr Akandoh attributed the alarming development to “either poor tests or fake results.”
Dr. Amuasi further stated that although Ghana seems to have an advantage due to its robust health sector, importance must still be accorded to the report presented by Frontiers Healthcare Service.
Giving prominence to the report, he advised that persons who come into the country must be given designated places of abode to isolate themselves to cease any further spread in case such persons are with the third wave.
