The Chief of Assin Bereku in the Assin North Constituency of the Central Region is appealing to the president and the judiciary to expedite action on the dual citizenship case of the Member of Parliament.
Nana Oduro Basa Yiadom II says the court case if it lingers on for too long, may affect the development of the constituency.
He wants the case to be fast-tracked to know the fate of their MP or allow him to serve the 4-year term devoid of litigation.
The Assin North constituency is one of three constituencies in the Assin area. NPP’s Abena Durowa Mensah lost the seat to the incumbent, Joe Gyaakye Quayson.
The election of Joe Gyaakye Quayson has not been without controversy as his eligibility is being challenged in court by a resident in the constituency.
The Tufuhen of the Assin Bereku Traditional Area, Nana Frimpong Baah spoke on behalf of the Paramount Chief of the area when the Central Regional Minister, Justina Marigold Assan, was on a working tour to the area.
Nana Oduro Basa Yiadom II, says the area is not enjoying the controversies that has engulfed their MP and wants the matter settled as fast as practicable in order for the MP to gain the peace of mind to assist the constituents.
He intimates, they risk getting zilch if the situation still persists and wants the president to intervene to either leave the MP to serve them in peace or have the matter settled with the speed of light.
“There is no peace in Assin North. I will tell you why. We went to cast our ballot and after voting Abena Durowaa Mensah lost. It is true that she did her best for us but the people used their thumb to take the decision. We after the results came out most of us were not happy because many wanted her to continue with her good works but the people had decided,” he explained.
He says after Joe Quayson won, all they heard was that the case was in court.
He states, “The truth is that when you have an MP that is swamped in litigation, how will he support his people and develop the area. If care is not taken, they will litigate and by the time we realize, the 4 years would elapse.”
The situation, he opines would have an adverse effect on the constituency.
Madam Minister, he stated further, “we know you could speak to the president on this. Tell him that we aren’t happy with the development and so something should be done. If it pleases him, 4 years is not far, the matter could be trashed so we could be relieved. We all know that if it continues like this, the MP can’t do anything to help us.
Central Region Minister, Justina Marigold Assan who has been touring the constituencies in the region expressed disgust at the level of destruction caused by ‘galamsey’ activities and wants the chiefs to partner government to fight the menace.
The galamsey activities have left in their wake inestimable destruction to the rivers and water bodies in the region with the Pra and Offin rivers being the hardest hits.
