Malaria vaccination in Keta municipality has seen much progress in the past months but not without difficulties.
In an interview with the Keta Municipal Health Director, Emmanuel Toruka Kona the main problem has been challenges in maintaining the corhort they started with.
According to Mr Kona, some of them who started with vaccination at some point had to travel, making it difficult for the consistency needed for the malaria vaccination
"Some start the vaccination, and along the line, they travel to the big cities. That's common with women who stay in the cities but return home to deliver," Mr Kona noted.
He said some mothers who are working finds it difficult in attending their routine vaccination because of the demands that comes with their jobs.
"We have also realized that some mothers too, because of their jobs, find it difficult to come to our routine vaccination centres for the children to be vaccinated Recently realized this when we visited some crèches within the municipality," he added.
Hopefully, he said some measures have been put in place for every eligible child to be vaccinated adding that the directorate are also auditing every under five mortality to ascertain the exact cause of death in the Keta Municipality.
“We are also auditing every under five mortality to ascertain the exact cause of death, coupled with our several other preventive interventions including education, an others,” Mr Kona noted
He, however, noted that the extent of change the new approach will bring will be confirmed at the end of month when all facilities would have entered their data
Some mothers who spoke with JoyNews said challenges with work has been a major concern to them and their families as they are not able to consistently take their babies and children under 5 for vaccination.
The mothers wish something could be done to help the situation so they children can get the needed vaccination.
