The National Democratic Congress has accused President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of making corruption an attractive venture in Ghana.
Speaking at a press conference, the party’s Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi claimed that despite professing to be incorruptible, the President and his Vice have been the “biggest” promotors and enablers of corruption in the country.
Supporting his point, Mr. Gyamfi named the PDS scandal, Agyapa deal, missing excavators, the contacts for sale scandal the former Public Procurement Authority boss, Mr. A.B Adjei was caught in, the Ameri-Novation deal among others as some of the corrupt deals under the Akufo-Addo administration.
“What is clear is that all these cases of corruption and stealing have cemented President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia’s reputation as the most corrupt President and Vice President in Ghana’s history.”
“Ghanaians are aware of the fact that President Akufo-Addo has failed to deliver on his 2016 campaign promise to protect the public purse when elected. In fact, we are all aware of how President Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia who once professed to be incorruptible have made corruption the most attractive venture in Ghana today,” he said on Monday.
His comment comes after the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) had chastised former President John Dramani Mahama over his accusations of corruption against the Akufo-Addo administration.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Accra Thursday, the General Secretary, Mr John Boadu, indicated that Mr. Mahama has no moral justification to talk about corruption.
“Former President Mahama asserts without proof that the NPP has stolen Ghana’s money and that, he can ensure accountability through elections. Extremely rich, coming from a party credited by the Supreme Court of Ghana, with the ability to ‘create, loot and share’ public funds with impunity,” John Boadu said.
However, Sammy Gyamfi believes that this administration has become the breeding ground for criminals with President Akufo-Addo shielding corrupt officials instead of prosecuting them.
“What is instructive in all this is the fact that none of the government officials and NPP functionaries responsible for all these cases of corruption which have occasioned huge financial losses to the state have been held responsible for any of these corrupt acts.”
Mr Gyamfi added that the NPP is petrified by former President Mahama’s call to vote them out in 2024.
He said that this is because it would give room for the NPP to be held accountable for their “unprecedented thievery and corruption”.
