One person has been crushed dead while four others are in critical condition, following a head-on collision by two vehicles on the Wenchi-Techiman highway.
The incident involved a Benz sprinter with registration number AS 5354-20 and an Opel Astra taxi cab with registration number AS 224–12.
Speaking to journalists, Wenchi District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Kofi Oduro Amponsah said his outfit had a distress call that there was an accident on the Wenchi-Techiman highway on Tuesday at about 6:00 pm.
DSP Oduro Amponsah explained that upon reaching the scene, they noticed that the Benz Sprinter, which was said to be travelling from Kumasi to Wa, made a wrongful overtaking.
"The driver of the Benz Sprinter, heading towards Wa, attempted to overtake, leading to head-on with the Opel Astra which was heading towards Techiman from Wenchi,” he said.
According to him, the four passengers who were severely injured were rushed to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased, identified as Francis Eleweh, age 36 has been sent to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, the Wenchi Divisional Commander of Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police.
A brother of the deceased, Kwame Waanaa told Adom News’ Christian Ofori Kumah that his late brother has left behind his pregnant wife and two children.
