The Tarkwa Divisional Police Command has arrested two persons in connection with an attack on a bullion van at Ransbet Supermarket in Tarkwa on Monday, October 18.

In a post on Facebook, the police service stated that the suspects are Charles Enning and Dorcas Akosua Amankwah, both workers of Mon-Trans Limited.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that suspects, Charles Enning, a driver and Dorcas Akosua Amankwah, a teller of the company, went to Ransbet Supermarket for proceeds made over the weekend to be deposited at the bank but failed to pick up the Police Officer who was detailed to provide security for them.”

“In the process of putting the money into the bullion van, the suspects were attacked by a masked armed man who bolted with the money on a standby motorbike,” the police said in their statement.

The Police added that the suspects in their custody are assisting them with the investigations following suspicion of complicity in the crime.

This comes after over ¢107,000 being carried in the bullion van, was robbed in front of the supermarket in Tarkwa.

There were no casualties as the robbers reportedly took the money without any resistance.

Eyewitnesses say the robbers monitored the van for a few minutes after it had arrived at the Ransbet Super Shopping Market at about 9 am to collect the weekend sales.

One of the robbers was said to have disguised himself as a shopper with a gun during the robbery.

Meanwhile, the police say the two robbers involved are being pursued and will be brought to justice.

“Any information that would lead to their arrest should be channelled to the Police for immediate action,” they added.

4 bullion vans attacked in the first half of 2021

The first half of 2021 has recorded four bullion van attacks.

JoyNews checks reveal that the robbers bolted with the cash on board the vehicles in three of the incidents.

In two of the cases, the police officers escorting the van lost their lives.

• On January 18, some highway robbers numbering about 10, attacked a bullion van travelling on a section of the Adansi Fomena road in the Ashanti Region and an amount of ¢500,000 was stolen.
• Sources indicate that the van, with registration number GT 543-19, was attacked around 10:30 am on the Adansi Fomena Road.
• The driver of the vehicle survived while the police officer escorting the van was killed, his AK47 assault rifle was stolen.
