The Minority Leader has called on President Akufo-Addo to establish a legal education reform commission following the recent rejection of some law students into the Ghana School of Law.
Haruna Iddrisu wants the President to treat the issue with all the urgency it deserves to ensure access to legal education.
He said should the President hesitate, Parliament will use its authority to constitute the Commission.
The Tamale South MP made these comments when he received a petition from the aggrieved candidates of the 2021 Ghana School of Law entrance on behalf of Parliament.
“Let me use this opportunity to call on President Nana Akufo-Addo, to, without any hesitation, and as a matter of urgency, constitute a legal education reform commission.
"If he fails to do that, we can use our legislative mandate and authority to get such a commission formed,” he said after receiving the petition.
On Wednesday, the National Association of Law Students (NALS) hit the streets of Accra to register their displeasure over the 2021 Ghana School of Law entrance exams failures.
The protestors, clad in red and black, are demanding reforms in legal education in the country.
They are unhappy that many law students are denied entry to the Ghana School of Law every year.
In Wednesday’s protest, their demands are for their colleagues who were denied admission, numbering over 400, to be admitted for the professional law course.
The protestors are also demanding an infrastructural expansion of the School.
Responding to this, Haruna Iddrisu said that such a problem could be solved when the government increases its budgetary allocation to the school.
“The space question can be dealt with through adequate budgetary allocation to the Ghana Law School and the affected Ministry so that they make access increasing available with without compromising quality,”
The Minority leader has assured the law students that parliament will look into the concerns raised in the petition and work on bringing the reforms into legal education in the country.
