The Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament has temporarily suspended public hearings in relation to the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021 Bill.
The suspension comes barely 24 hours after the first hearing from petitioners on the Bill on Thursday, November 11, 2021.
Chairman of the Committee, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi after the first session of the public hearing they realised they had to suspend it due to time constraints.
“We haven’t finished with the public hearings. There are other memoranda that we have received but we are constrained with time and we cannot predict what time we would have to meet and continue,” he said.
The Committee is expected to listen to over 140 memoranda on the LGBTQ+ Bill submitted before the house.
Appearing before the committee during the first hearing on Thursday, the Concerned Ghanaian Citizens, a group opposing the passage of the Bill described it as a violation of human rights.
They stressed that the Bill will promote hate against persons belonging to the LGBTQ+ communities.
Spokesperson for the group, Akoto Ampaw accused the Speaker of violating the constitution by allowing the bill to be introduced in Parliament.
He called on the house to reject the passage of the Bill.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has called for the swift passage of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021 into law.
The Council, before the committee on Thursday emphasized that the bill is in the right direction and will help protect Ghanaian moral values and norms.
Other groups that appeared before the committee on the first day of hearing included; the Human Rights Coalition, Amnesty International and Advocates for Christ.
