The 2022 National Chocolate Day was commemorated in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti Region to honour ex-President John Agyekum Kufour.
Bars of chocolate were distributed to pupils of Darbah cluster of schools and to cocoa farmers in the district.
Pupils of Darbah D/A primary school could not hide their excitement after receiving chocolates from the Ghana Cocoa Board.
According to Cocobod, the national chocolate day was initiated by John Agyekum Kufour who hails from Darbah in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District.
It was therefore deemed perfect to celebrate this year's National Chocolate Day in the area.
Board member of COCOBOD, Naa Adwoa Dokuah, explained that, domestic consumption of chocolate has seen a significant boost especially on National Chocolate Day because the day also coincides with Valentine’s Day which falls on 14th February every year.
“The national chocolate day celebration idea was instituted by former tourism minister Jake Obetsebi Lamptey during ex-President John Agyekum Kufour’s time in 2005 and this is an opportunity to honour the president in his hometown
Most children in the rural areas have not tasted chocolate, so we thought it wise to share some chocolates with them,” she said.
The theme for this year's celebration is "Eat Chocolate, Stay Healthy, Grow Ghana".
The Ashanti Regional Cocobod Administrator, William Kwaku Siriboe Prempeh, observed the celebration for the past 17 years has improved the chocolate business.
“We could have gone to other places but this is an opportunity to honour the ex-president. Unfortunately, in Africa, people honour the dead more than the living, but I believe this is the time to honour him for what he has done for the nation
Since the inception of chocolate day, the financial implication, source of revenue and increase in the awareness of chocolate has increased and it has brought extra revenue to most of the companies that process the cocoa beans to chocolate, so it has been beneficial,” he noted.
COCOBOD plans to increase the number of schools that benefit from the National ‘Chocolate Day.
