Members of the legal team for Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson, say they disagrees with the Supreme Court's ruling barring their client from performing Parliamentary duties as it hears the case against him.
A member, Baba Jamal, speaking to the press following court proceedings on Wednesday, argued that it is unfair to leave the people of Assin North without a representation.
According to him, he did not expected that ruling from the apex court since the MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Alhassan, was allowed to perform her Parliamentary duties while the court determined her case in 2019.
Describing the ruling as a "sad situation", he said: "The Supreme Court has given its ruling but we vehemently disagree with their position. I think it is a sad day for all of us. What it means is that Assin North people are not going to have representation in Parliament for as long as this case lasts. That is a sad situation.
There are precedence in this country. We remember the case in Ayawaso West Wuogon where the lady was allowed to stay in Parliament until the final day of the determination of the case. I thought that the Supreme Court will consider that situation and allow a representation."
According to Baba Jamal, the people of Assin North "deserve their representation in Parliament."
On Wednesday morning, the Supreme Court in a majority 5-2 decision, ruled that Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson can no longer perform Parliamentary duties.
The ruling is to be upheld until the determination of the substantive case filed against him at the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has ordered an expedited hearing and determination of the matter.
Justices Dordzie and Nene Amegatcher held the minority view.
The case was heard by Justices Jones Dotse, Agnes Dordzie, Nene Amegatcher, Mariama Owusu, Gertrude Torkonoo, Prof Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Emmanuel Y. Kulendi.
Meanwhile, Baba Jamal says Mr Gyakye Quayson will be engaged to help know the next step to take.
