Private Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu has expressed doubt over the government's commitment to equip state institutions mandated to fight corruption.
In an interview on Mid-Day News on Friday, he alleged that government officials are making huge money through dubious means, hence, will not support the course to strengthen any fight against corruption.
“It is the plain truth, let us just say it as it, because people are making money in government, people are making millions of dollars, so they are not eager to strengthen the Special Prosecutor to come after them,” he said.
For this reason, he urged the public to be vigilant.
According to him, “this problem is one that we as citizens, we are also partly to blame for."
The Office of the Special Prosecutor does not have a board, nine months after Kissi Agyabeng was appointed.
JoyNews sources say although the OSP has written multiple letters to the Presidency reminding it of the need to inaugurate the Board to ensure smooth operation of the Office, this has not been done.
However, the absence of the Board is not the only challenge facing the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
The other challenge is inadequate resources and the inability of the office to put contract workers on its pay roll.
Mr. Kpebu believes the interests on the part of powerful people in public service are frustrating the process.
“I can’t imagine that for nine months, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng will be quiet. I don’t expect that you will be cozy with government, if your board is not being constituted come out,” he urged.
On his part, anti-corruption crusader, Vitus Azeem says he is not surprised about the development because President Akufo-Addo lacks the temerity to fight corruption.
He called on anti-corruption bodies to come out and call on President Akufo-Addo to appoint the board.
