Some Public Health analysts are advocating for a review of the covid-19 safety protocols as the country’s active cases continue to rise.
According to them, the re-introduction of the safety protocols is very critical in combating the persisting disease.
Already two new strains of the omicron variant have been detected by scientists sequencing Sars-Cov-2 in Ghana.
Speaking in a webinar organized by the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP), the scientists expressed concern over the detection of omicron variant in the country.
Founding Director of WACCBIP, Professor Gordon Awandare asked for monitoring to be intensified.
“It is interesting to note that we have now detected BA4 and BA5 in Ghana for the first time and it explains the increasing number that we’re seeing and it means that we have to get back to some of the protocols that we have relaxed.
“The protection from previous exposure to the Omicron BA1 and BA2 does not protect adequately against these variants,” he stated.
A Research fellow at WACCBIP, Dr. Yaw Bediako also mentioned the need for boosters to be given within a 6-month interval to ensure potency against the virus.
Ghana has seen a rise in Covid-19 cases in recent times.
According to the Ghana Health Service portal, active cases stands at 452.
