Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, has described the performance of Ghana’s contingent at the just ended Commonwealth Games as excellent.

Ghana had a total of five medals at the games held in Birmingham, an improvement on the previous edition in Australia where Ghana returned home with only a medal.

Ghana won a silver medal in the featherweight division through Joseph Commey while Abdul Wahid Omar and Abram Mensah won bronze medals in their various weight categories.

In track and field, Joseph Paul Amoah won bronze in the Men’s 200 meters final race while Deborah Acquah defied all odds to win bronze in the Women’s long jump competition.

Ghana presented a total of 101 athletes who competed in 13 different sporting disciplines.

Speaking exclusively to Luv Sports from Birmingham, the National Sports Authority boss indicated that the performance of the contingent at the games was outstanding.

“I must say that the Ghanaian contingent who are here have excelled in so many of the disciplines that we participated in. They all have done so well, either improved on their personal best or won medals. In terms of medal winnings, this particular year has seen one of the excellent performances from our athletes. If you remember, in 2018 Ghana could achieve only a medal but this year, we won five. You can see that in those areas where we couldn’t win medals the performance has been great and excellent. The team has done so well and deserve the medals,” Professor Twumasi stressed.

The NSA boss also indicated that the improvement in performance by the Ghanaian team at the Birmingham Games is largely due to the steady and well-planned arrangement for the athletes and the infrastructural development of sporting facilities across the country.

“There’s a consistent well-programmed arrangement which really is bringing to fruition some of these results that we are seeing. I must commend especially, President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo for having the commitment to support us in terms of infrastructural development which we are doing so well. Especially, when it comes to the renovation being carried out in our old facilities and the new ones which are being put up every now and then,” said Prof. Twumasi.  

Meanwhile, Ghana was ranked 28^th while Nigeria was ranked 7th as the African country with most medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
