Government has expressed concern about the increasing complaints of medical negligence among medical doctors in some health facilities across the country.
The disturbing phenomenon has, in recent years, resulted in the loss of lives or avoidable health complications in some cases.
Coupled with inadequate specialists in some regions, poor professional attitude and negligence are adversely impacting healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The situation according to the Vice President is worrying.
He however urged the Medical and Dental Council not to compromise the healthcare needs of Ghanaians by allowing incompetent medical doctors to flood the space.
Dr Bawumia encouraged them to rather develop creative means of boosting the local production of doctors.
The Vice President said this at the 50th anniversary conference of the Medical and Dental Council in Accra.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Bawumia said “we are happy that the Council is defining clear boundaries so that the various categories of practitioners know the limits to their practice in the interest of patient safety and well-being.”
Dr. Bawumia said the Vice President however commended the Medical and Dental Council for being proactive by launching policy documents on Specialist Register, Practitioners Stamp and scope of practice for Physician assistants in order to address some of the challenges affecting the health sector.
He expressed optimism that the conference will come out with solutions to fix challenges in the entire public sector where similar concerns exist.
