President of Small Scale Miners Association, Michael Kojo Peprah, has alleged that ‘galamsey’ kingpin, Aisha Huang returned to the country six months after her deportation.
Mr. Peprah disclosed to Evans Mensah on Top Story, Wednesday, that Aisha Huang was spotted by some small scale miners at Dadieso, a town close to the Ivory Coast border months after her deportation.
According to him, the Chinese national had been engaging in ‘galamsey’ activities in the country since then.
“After six months, she was sighted around Dadieso. As a matter of fact, in that enclave, there is a mining activity going on. She was having her activities close to the Côte d'Ivoire border and when things become tough, she would go to Côte d'Ivoire and when things come down, she comes back to Ghana. She stayed there for a while then she moved to Mali and she later decided to come back to settle here. That is how come she came on a Togolese visa,” he told Evans Mensah.
Mr. Michael Kojo Peprah alleged that Aisha Huang’s affiliation with some big wigs in government has aided her ‘galamsey’ operations.
“For her to even come back to this country and to engage in the same activity you should understand that there are some big shots behind it because she herself is not super powerful. There are politicians who find her as a money bag and in so doing do everything in their own possible way to protect her,” he stated.
The ‘galamsey’ kingpin, Aisha Huang, was arrested in 2017 for engaging in illegal mining. The 47-year-old Chinese national was later deported in 2019 by the government, a move which triggered questions about Ghana’s commitment to eradicating the menace.
Few days ago, news broke about the re-arrest of the ‘galamsey’ Kingpin in her residence at Kumasi for her alleged involvement in the sale and purchase of minerals without a license.
The announcement of her re-arrest and return to the country shocked many Ghanaians and has brought back the discourse on the country’s fight against ‘galamsey’.
Meanwhile, the Attorney-General has called for the case docket of the galamsey queen and says they will begin prosecution of Aisha Huang for her past and current offences.
