More nurses and midwives are threatening to leave the profession should government fail to honour its obligations and promises to them.

According to the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, its members are unhappy about the nonpayment of Covid-19 insurance packages for frontline health workers.

The Association is therefore questioning government’s commitment to their welfare.

 “The major challenge is the insurance package government promised all nurses and midwives who contract the virus. But as of now, we’ve not gotten any positive information from our members.”

Speaking to JoyNews, the Association’s General Secretary David Tenkorang said such disappointments are a major push factor for the high attrition.

“The motivation is low and now people are leaving and they continue to leave because there is no motivation to stay in Ghana. Whatever you are promised is not paid.

“Most of our people had to take care of their own medical bills when they tested positive for Covid -19. And this is unacceptable,” he stated.
